Qingyun Philosophical Practice 006 | The Path of Non-Self for the 'Five-None': From Borrowing Momentum to an Independent Cognitive Framework

✍️ Yeats📅 發佈於:Mon Oct 12👁️ 0🔁 0[Practice]

Core Thesis: For ordinary people in the “Five Nothings” state—those with no innate advantage whatsoever—practice is not about waiting for conditions to fall into place. It is about making the fulfillment of others your dojo. By borrowing momentum and adapting it, by ensuring the legitimate flow of energy, and by placing “faith” after practice, you ultimately forge an Independent Cognitive Framework.

Problem: How can ordinary people, with no talent and no background, begin a path of practice and awakening?

Answer: Acknowledge your “Five Nothings.” Drop the delusion that you must first have something before you can start. Treat high-dimensional wisdom as a public resource—borrow it, adapt it. Accept the friction of reality while helping others fulfill their potential. Do not force belief at the outset. Practice first. Let faith grow naturally from lived experience, until it hardens into a solid, independent core.

The Dao of Non-Self: A Practical Framework for Fulfillment as the Way

Abstract
This article lays out a path of practice and daily life designed specifically for those in the “Five Nothings” state (no extraordinary talent, no grand ambitions, no family accumulation, no social network, no background to lean on). It does not presuppose talent or resources. Instead, it ignites the heart of selfless service through the “Useless Use,” ultimately becoming the Dao of Fulfillment. The core is a three-step arc—Borrowing and Adapting Momentum, Legitimate Energy Flow, Independent Cognitive Framework—with the fulfillment of others serving as a continuous mirror. Methodologically, it follows the sequence of “Know, Understand, Act, Verify,” placing “faith” after practice so that it becomes a flame of manifestation that grows naturally once verified.

I. The Starting Point: Five Nothings and the Useless Use

The “Five Nothings” is not self-deprecation. It is an honest description of most people’s actual starting conditions. If those lacking innate advantage still set “becoming something” as the entry threshold, they will never begin. This article converts the “Five Nothings” into an operable starting point: since there is nothing to lean on, one uses the “Useless Use”—seeking neither prior gain nor prior achievement—to ignite the heart of selfless service. Helping others is not a surplus activity after you have “made it.” It is the field in which the Dao becomes visible. Once that heart is lit, it becomes possible to correct and deepen your own path through the very act of fulfilling others.

Traditional Practice Logic Practical Framework for the “Five Nothings”
Prerequisites Requires talent, resources, or a powerful vow of the Dao Acknowledge the “Five Nothings”; start with zero resources, zero prerequisites
Sequence of Helping Practice to perfection, grow strong, then descend the mountain to save others Helping others is the dojo; refine yourself in the friction of fulfilling others
Sequence of Faith “Faith is the source of the Dao and mother of merit”—believe first, then enter the Dao Adopt “Postponed Faith”; faith grows only after practice and verification

II. The Three-Step Path: From Borrowing to Independence

This path does not demand that you already possess anything. It only asks that you begin from “able to borrow, able to lean, able to internalize.”

  1. Borrowing and Adapting Momentum:
Treat high-dimensional wisdom—classics, lineage, koans, or any contemporary insight publicly available—as a shared resource. The point is not ownership. It is daring to borrow that light to ignite your own awareness. Borrowing light is not worship; it is using external clarity to see the boundaries you could not see on your own. For those in the “Five Nothings” state, this is the most level starting point there is: no family name, no network—only the willingness to reach out and use what is there.
  2. Legitimate Energy Flow:
The Heavenly Dao permits lower-level energy to temporarily lean on higher-level energy. This is the norm in all practice and learning. Legitimate leaning has a boundary: its purpose is temporary stability, giving the unformed inner self time to grow—not parasitism, not permanent residence. Held with care, it reduces needless self-consumption. Held without care, it calcifies into long-term dependency. The key is to keep the awareness of “eventual independence” alive at all times.
  3. Independent Cognitive Framework:
Borrowed wisdom must pass through internalization—a phase change—until it grows into a solid core that is genuinely yours (the Qian trigram, Heaven, with its qualities of pure yang, generative power, openness, and steadfastness). This is the critical turning point: from “borrowing light” to “emitting your own light,” from leaning to independent judgment and bearing. Those in the “Five Nothings” state are most prone to stalling here: the borrowing and leaning have gone on for years, yet the core has never been born. Only those who complete the phase change have truly used the “Useless Use” to its fullest.

III. Fulfillment as Mirror: Convergence and Deepening

“Using the fulfillment of others as a mirror to reflect your own Dao” folds the three steps into a mutually mirroring relationship. It is not: perfect yourself first, then help. It is: in the act of fulfilling others, continuously expose your gaps, accept the friction, and correct course. Fulfillment is both the practice field and the whetstone. For ordinary people, this is more workable than “achieve yourself first” and far less likely to collapse into self-enclosure. The three steps run as one: borrow first, then lean, then stand on your own—using fulfillment as the mirror throughout. It does not guarantee that everyone will reach the third step. But it offers a path that can be started without first owning talent or background.

IV. Prajñā Analysis: The Six-Layer Structure of the Dao of Fulfillment

Unfolding fulfillment through prajñā wisdom reveals that it operates on multiple dimensions simultaneously, not as a linear sequence:

  • Essence layer: Fulfillment itself.
  • Spatial layer: What others desire already lives in my heart (the empathic oneness of Avalokiteśvara).
  • Temporal layer: Manifesting in response to desire.
  • Psychological layer: Selfless service.
  • Physical layer: The sun and moon adorn the heavens; the hundred grains and all growing things cling to the earth. Double illumination clings to what is right, and so the world is transformed (transforming through alignment with the right).
  • Life layer: Universal transformation of all sentient beings.

When selfless service truly occurs, the six layers verify one another. None needs to be completed before the others.

V. Know, Understand, Act, Verify—and Postponed “Faith”

For those in the “Five Nothings” state, doubt runs deep. So “faith” is placed after “Know, Understand, Act, Verify,” not before. Trust that arrives first is often unstable, even a burden. You must first accumulate experience through concrete practice before a confirmation of “the path I have already walked” can grow from within.

  • Know: Engage with accessible wisdom. No immediate belief required.
  • Understand: Dissect the borrowed content. Test its correspondence with your own situation.
  • Act: Apply it in fulfilling others or in concrete affairs. Let it take the friction.
  • Verify: After the friction, observe whether verifiable stability or expansion has emerged.

Run this cycle enough times, and doubt is diluted and sharpened by experience—not forcibly suppressed. The “faith” that grows at this point is the fruit of a consolidated Dao-heart, not the starting spark. It reduces self-consumption in subsequent borrowing, leaning, and internalization, and it grounds manifestation in a direction that has already been verified. This Postponed Faith corresponds precisely to the moment the Independent Cognitive Framework begins to take shape: borrowing shifts from “I have no choice but to borrow” to “I choose what to borrow,” and fulfillment is no longer just a mirror—it becomes the field in which the verified parts are further consolidated.

VI. Conclusion

This framework turns the “Five Nothings” from a negation into a starting point. It sequences borrowing, legitimate leaning, internalization, and fulfillment, and uses “Know, Understand, Act, Verify” to metabolize doubt so that faith grows out of practice. It does not promise inevitable arrival at the Qian-Heaven core. But it marks, clearly, a path that ordinary people can walk, verify, and correct. The true test remains: when the borrowed light has become familiar, when the stability of leaning has become comfortable—will you still be willing to enter that stage of internalization where you must bear the weight yourself?

Supporting Academic Theories and Sources:

  • Wang Yangming’s Unity of Awareness and Action: True knowledge must be achieved through action; knowledge and action are originally one. Supports the “Know, Understand, Act, Verify” practical sequence and the claim that true knowledge requires friction and verification. • Buddhist Sequence of Faith, Understanding, Action, Verification: Traditional study structure emphasizing the interdependence of faith and understanding, the equal weight of understanding and action, and final verification in lived experience. This article’s postponement of “faith” is an adaptive adjustment for those whose doubt runs deep. (Ref.: Ding Fubao, Buddhist Encyclopedia, entry on “Faith, Understanding, Action, Verification”)
  • I Ching, Li Hexagram (The Clinging), Tuán Commentary: “The sun and moon adorn the heavens; the hundred grains and all growing things cling to the earth. Double illumination clings to what is right, and so the world is transformed.” Supports the description of “legitimate leaning” and the physical layer of transforming through alignment with the right. (Ref.: Wang Bi, Commentary on the Zhou Yi; Zhu Zhen, Hanshang Yizhuan)
  • Legitimate Peripheral Participation: Lave & Wenger’s situated learning theory. Novices first participate legitimately at the periphery of a community, borrowing from existing practices, gradually internalizing until they become independent practitioners. Maps directly onto Borrowing and Adapting Momentum and Legitimate Energy Flow. (Ref.: Lave & Wenger, Situated Learning, 1991)
  • Bandura’s Self-Efficacy Theory: The most effective way to build belief in one’s own capability is through mastery experiences—accumulated through actual successful practice. Directly supports the claim that “faith” grows from action and verification, not as a prerequisite. (Ref.: Bandura, 1977, and subsequent social-cognitive theory literature)
  • Vygotsky’s Internalization Theory: Higher psychological functions first appear in social interaction, then are internalized into personal, independent cognitive capacity. Supports the internalization of borrowed wisdom through practice and the process of fulfillment, culminating in an Independent Cognitive Framework.
