White Peacock 010 | The Ladder of Practice: From the Comparative Mind of Indirect Resource to Present-Moment Wholeness

From Comparison and Resentment to the Wholeness of the Present
Question: What obstacles do people with an Indirect Resource profile tend to face in their practice, and how can they overcome the internal friction that follows?
Answer: The Indirect Resource profile carries a strong self-protective instinct and a deep pull toward comparison, which easily spirals into bitterness and self-consuming friction over gains and losses. The way out is to recognize the universal principle that substance must match title, to withdraw the energy spent measuring yourself against others and turn it inward toward refinement, to accept where you stand, and to feel that the present moment is already whole.
People with an Indirect Resource Profile tend to carry less inherent fortune. I’m not without anything, but I’ve come to accept that I can’t measure myself against others — and that acceptance makes life so much lighter.
When I first walked into the academy to study the Dharma, my Ego was enormous. I was comparing myself to everyone, constantly, weighing every outcome. And reality would always slap me in the face — more than once, I was so close to earning Heaven’s recognition, so close to advancing, and then the opportunity simply dissolved in front of me. All I could do was watch, wide-eyed, as others stepped forward while I stayed rooted in place.
I was bitterly unwilling to accept it. Over and over I asked, Why? My Master refused to let me through just to spare me the sting of failure. He kept me under the strictest discipline until I truly saw where I had gone wrong.
It took years before I could actually live what he taught. I learned that it’s fine to care about the outcome, but I have to look at what I’ve actually put in — whether my substance matches my title. If it doesn’t, then it’s only fair. I go back, sharpen my practice, and come again.
Now I’m content with my place. I trust Heaven’s arrangement and pour my energy into learning. And naturally, the comparing fades. I accept where I am; what is meant to unfold will unfold. The present moment is already whole~
| Past Ego State (Indirect Resource Defense Mechanism) | Current Practice State (Indirect Resource System Upgrade) |
|---|---|
| Constantly comparing with others, gripped by attachment to gains and losses | Contented learning — trusting Heaven’s arrangement, no longer clinging to comparison |
| Chasing external recognition, seething as opportunities slip away | Focusing on substance matching title; if misaligned, calmly returning to refine before trying again |
| Trapped in the internal friction of why | Accepting the present state, feeling that the present moment is already whole |
