Walking with the Divine 014 | The Gods Don't Clock In: Bamboo Sticks vs. Smartphones in Divination — Which Is More Accurate?
Core Thesis: What this article truly argues is this: communicating with the divine does not depend on the elaborate rituals of physical media. The Heavenly Dao (the Cosmic Server) possesses infinite Backward Compatibility. Whether it is a physical ritual object or electronic code, they are all equal communication interfaces. Ritual is the psychological language humans use to establish trust—not a threshold set by the divine.
Question: Using a phone for electronic divination lacks the solemnity of traditional ritual. Is it really accurate?
Answer: Yes. The Heavenly Dao is a super-server with infinite adaptability. Whatever medium you present, the divine adapts to that interface. The code operations of a phone and the physical collision of bamboo sticks are completely equivalent in the universe’s underlying logic. One thought stirs, and the screen manifests the oracle.
Is Phone Divination Really Accurate? A Confession from the Developer of VibeIching: The Divine Doesn’t Clock In, and Divination Doesn’t Require Ritual
As the founder of VibeIching, the developer of an online I Ching divination program, I once harbored a deeply ironic secret: for a long time, I didn’t actually use the code I’d written.
Whenever life presented a crossroads, or a wave of confusion welled up inside me, I would silently turn off my phone screen, pull open a drawer, and take out my treasured set of physical bamboo sticks.
You might ask: You don’t trust the electronic divination system you built yourself?
In my view at the time, no. Because code has no warmth, and screens have no spirit. I stubbornly believed that only physical ritual objects could carry the Vibe that connects to the Heavenly Dao. I even ranked them: Bamboo sticks > Dice > Mobile apps.
Until, later, I went through a prolonged inner war, forcing myself to completely wean myself off physical ritual objects.
I told myself: As the founder of VibeIching, if you don’t even use your own app—what kind of nonsense is that!!!
Looking back at that version of myself today, it’s almost funny:
How narrow my understanding of the Heavenly Dao truly was;
and how much of my once-proud “piety”
was just my own obsessive attachment.
Today, I want to talk to you about the underlying truth of Cyber-Metaphysics, and what actually happens when you tap the screen to seek an oracle.
I. The “White Ring” Before the Forehead: The Ultimate Flow State Ritual Objects Bring
When I first started learning the I Ching, I took the traditional path—Ancient Divination Method.
The Ancient Divination Method has nothing to do with the noisy stick-cylinder shaking you see in TV dramas. It is extremely quiet, even carrying a solemn tension. Before every casting, I would press forty-nine bamboo sticks tightly against my forehead.
In that moment of closing my eyes and gathering my spirit, my vision went pure black. But in the instant the bamboo touched my forehead skin, something miraculous happened—in the pure black of my mind, a pure white, blurry ring would suddenly flash right at the center of my brow, seemingly accompanied by a faint tap-tap sound. (This is purely my subjective experience; it doesn’t mean everyone will have it, nor do they need to.)
In that moment, I could feel my Vibe (intention, willpower) pouring continuously through the pineal gland, streaming into the bamboo sticks. Holding my breath, gathering my spirit—at the instant intuition peaked, my hands would separate the sticks at random. In that parting and reuniting, the oracle had already manifested.
The experience was so sacred, so intoxicating. It engaged touch, sight, hearing, movement, and breath in full. It drew an impossibly clear line between “the everyday me” and “the me preparing to divinate.” For me, this was not just divination; it was a deep self-dialogue and meditation.
So I always felt that phone divination carried an “original sin.” I poured everything into simulating ritual in the code, but reason told me a glass screen could never deliver that soul-stirring experience. The phone lowered the operational cost, but it also killed the immersive, bodily participation.
This is path dependence. I had mistaken this sensory experience for the only password to the divine.
II. You Worry Others Aren’t Pious, but Really You’re Carrying the “Ritual” for Them
Then, a session of divination for a friend shattered my pride.
That was when I had just started introducing the I Ching to others. He was encountering divination for the first time and knew nothing of the rules. He didn’t press the bamboo sticks against his forehead, hadn’t experienced any “white ring flash,” and even his technique for separating the sticks was a mess.
I stood beside him, watching with dread: “This is way too impious! No held breath, no gathered spirit—the whole qi field is scattered. How could this casting possibly be accurate?”
But when the result came out, the precision and accuracy of the hexagram left me stunned.
In that moment, I suddenly realized an incredibly awkward fact:
What I called “impious” was just my own delusion.
The divine didn’t care, the other person didn’t care,
and I was the only one in the room worrying for nothing.
This exposed an incredibly subtle psychological shift:
At first, ritual helped me settle my mind, helped me build trust in the Heavenly Dao.
But then, because I trusted the ritual so deeply, I began demanding that others follow it too.
This isn’t just my problem. Look at any religion, any spiritual community, any tech forum—a practice that was once useful gradually hardens into a “qualification check”: Only doing it this way counts as serious. Only having experienced this counts as entry-level. Only following these rules will the divine listen to you.
You think you’re guarding the purity of faith, but really, you’ve just turned “personal experience” into “a gate for others.” Originally, the ritual served you. Now, you (and everyone else) serve the ritual.
It hit me: I can cherish my own ritual, but I absolutely should not demand ritual from others.
III. The “API Interface” of the Heavenly Dao: An Epiphany Across Media
Once I saw through this, I looked at VibeIching’s divination interface and made a decision: I had to cross this threshold myself. Starting now, I’d switch entirely to code-based divination.
If I expected my users and readers to use electronic divination while I hid behind the scenes, secretly using bamboo sticks, that wouldn’t just be hypocritical—it would prove that, at the deepest logical level, I didn’t believe in my own product.
In those first days, I was riddled with psychological suspicion and physical discomfort.
No bamboo under my fingers, no mysterious white halo—could it possibly be accurate?
But after pushing through the initial awkwardness, countless eerily accurate, heart-piercing readings came down like heavy hammers, shattering my prejudice completely.
I finally grasped what I’d call the core principle of Cyber-Metaphysics:
Communication with the divine is unbound by any object.
On the Heavenly Dao’s end, there is infinite Backward Compatibility.
The Heavenly Dao is that super-server with infinite adaptability. Whatever we present, whatever we believe, the other side automatically adapts to that “interface request.”
You bring Zi Wei Dou Shu, and the divine speaks to you in Zi Wei Dou Shu;
You bring Plum Blossom Yi, and the divine speaks to you in Plum Blossom Yi;
You bring Tarot cards, and the divine speaks to you in Tarot rules;
You bring VibeIching, and the divine speaks to you in VibeIching code;
You bring bamboo sticks, and the divine manifests the result on the bamboo sticks;
You bring dice, and the divine manifests the answer on the dice;
You open your phone, and the divine still speaks through the VibeIching Protocol, pushing the universe’s echo to your screen, line by line of code.
| Medium Type | Human Perception | Cosmic Reality |
|---|---|---|
| Physical ritual objects (bamboo sticks / dice) | Full of spirit; requires incense and ritual; the orthodox path to the divine | The Heavenly Dao API’s physical interface |
| Electronic media (phone / VibeIching) | Cold glass and code; lacks bodily immersion and ritual | The Heavenly Dao API’s digital interface—fully equivalent |
The phone’s “flaw” is that it’s too convenient—but that’s precisely its greatest advantage—
A person just wants to quickly untangle their current confusion.
Why must they be forced to bathe, change, and sit bolt-upright,
to complete an ancient physical labor ritual?
IV. The Divine Doesn’t Clock In: Turning Divination into a “Reflection Plugin” for Reading
What VibeIching truly eliminates isn’t ritual itself, but “the fear ritual manufactures.”
The traditional mindset keeps threatening you: You didn’t wash your hands today—you’re not worthy to ask. You didn’t go to the proper temple—the divine can’t hear you.
But our worldview is: The divine doesn’t clock in.
You can ask while lying on your side in bed, lost in a midnight insomnia.
You can ask on a crowded bus, when you’re unsure about today’s meeting.
So I made a crucial product design decision: I put the divination interface right at the end of every article.
When you’re reading an article, struck by a line, and your current dilemma surfaces in your mind—your intuition is at its strongest in that moment.
You don’t need to break your flow, or jump off the page to hunt down some “Sacred Divination Hall.”
Where the question arises is where the divination can happen.
For VibeIching, this is an attempt to release the sacred into daily life—rather than demanding daily life become sacred first, before the sacred is allowed to appear.
V. No Sword Surpasses the Sword: Ritual Is My Language, Not the Divine’s Rule
By now, you might be asking: So have you completely abandoned the bamboo sticks?
No.
Sometimes, in deeply solemn moments—when asking a god I hold in high reverence, or a question of great weight—I still pick up those bamboo sticks. I still savor that white ring flashing in the pure black.
But my state has shifted.
Jin Yong wrote: “Grass, wood, bamboo, stone—all can be swords, until you enter the realm where no sword surpasses the sword.”
The swordless realm doesn’t mean breaking every sword in the world. It means:
When you hold a heavy dark-iron sword, you can wield it;
When you hold nothing but a twig, you can still strike true.
Ritual is a language between me and the divine—not a rule I impose on the divine.
I love bamboo sticks, so I use bamboo sticks;
I want to ask a question on my phone at 2 a.m., so I just tap the screen.
I won’t assume someone can’t receive an answer just because their casting technique differs from mine;
I no longer wonder if I’ve done something wrong just because I skipped the incense and the bath.
This is VibeIching’s deepest Vibe:
The divine doesn’t care. Humans do.
You can have ritual without clinging to ritual;
You can have no ritual without doubting its absence.
The medium can shift a thousand ways; the form can be free.
What truly matters is why you ask,
and, after receiving that echo from across dimensions,
how you face your life right now.
Now, if a question has been hanging in your chest for a while,
you don’t need to hunt for bamboo sticks, or wait for an auspicious day.
Below this article, that interface requiring no elaborate ceremony,
is opening for you.

Existing research can explain some psychological functions of ritual, and the classics can provide the historical background of divination traditions, but neither proves that the divine will automatically adapt to all media, that phone casting and bamboo-stick casting share the same accuracy, or that hexagrams displayed on a screen are necessarily responses from the universe.
